This descant is a big one for a well-known, and powerful hymn. Written for the funeral of a dear choir member, the text really helped move the music. The first half has the sopranos in standard 1:1 counterpoint, adding a beautiful harmony above the melody. At the mid-point, at "now we're changed", the sopranos split into two parts and sail up higher, as the organ crescendos to musically develop that transition. A few bars later, something unexpected happens: the text speaks of moving up into heaven and the organ drops out, allowing Spirit move via the 2:1 Gospel-style descant line. The organ comes back in with some dirty chords to support the soprano's hike way up to a high C (truly up in heaven!). A few altered notes add to the flavor of the organ score as the verse comes to a dramatic close. This hymn is a memorable way to end a service.
